Kendra slipped her badge into her own pocket. "That was a super awesome battle, Brock. What's the next gym we should head to now?"

"Most trainers usually head to Cerulean City," said Brock. "There's a gym there that specializes in Water-type Pokemon. It's just past Mt. Moon, to the east."

"Thanks," Kendra said. She turned to Blake. "What do you think? We can grab some sleep and then head that way tomorrow unless you have another idea."

"Nah, that all sounds good to me," Blake replied. "Type advantage for you and a neutral ground for me. Sounds like good stuff."

Brock arched an eyebrow. "That's going to get rough soon. Type advantages will only get you so far. But, then again, you're a well-matched team. Ignore me."

"We should get moving though," Blake conceded. "Thanks for the badges and experience, Brock. It's been a pleasure."

"Have fun," Brock said, saluting.

The next morning, after enjoying a continental breakfast provided by the Pokemon Center, Kendra and Blake set off for Mt. Moon, ready for the challenges that lay ahead.

After two hours of walking, Kendra was ready for the challenges to stop laying ahead and to start appearing. She was bored, and it was hot out, and for whatever stupid reason, they hadn't run into a single wild Pokemon or trainer. Kendra had tried to keep from complaining, but she had just about reached her limit. She opened her mouth to say something... when they rounded a corner in the path and saw a Pokemon Center and, more importantly, the entrance to Mt. Moon up ahead. It would be an exaggeration to say that Kendra forgot all about her complaints, but the sight did lift her spirits considerably. Said spirits were lifted even more when a patch of grass up ahead and to the right began rustling in a way that just possibly meant there was a Pokemon there.

"Awesome," Blake said, excited. "The center's just around here. If you don't mind, we could stop there for a short break before heading up to the mountain. I mean, it's not like-"

Blake was not as spacially aware as he would have preferred to be. "Clumsy" is a good word for it. In fact, the very patch of grass that Kendra had eyed moments earlier, Blake proceeded to walk over.

"-Row." Blake froze. He looked down, praying that his imagination had taken over. He had no such luck. His luck, instead, provided him with a fairly irritated Spearow that did not take kindly to getting kicked.

The Pokemon took flight, swooping down at Blake, taking pot-shots at the young man. Blake put his hands over his head to shield himself, but that was all he could think to do.

Kendra, not being under attack at the moment, was able to take action. She tossed Olive's Pokeball, releasing the Oddish. "Olive, go! Use-" Kendra hesitated. An Acid attack was probably not the best idea when Blake was in the attack area. "Use Absorb on the Spearow!" Kendra called to her Pokemon.

Olive used its attack, and the Spearow broke off its attack when it felt its energy being suddenly drained. Kendra nodded in satisfaction. That would give Blake an opportunity to escape the Spearow.

Olive's attack ended, and the Spearow turned its attention to the foe that was attacking it. It flew towards Olive, intending a Peck attack. "Dodge it and keep using Absorb!" Kendra ordered her Pokemon.

"Every once in a while, I can get something right," Blake said, chomping down on his wrap. "I agree. We should head out. I'm rested enough, and the Pokemon seem to be healed. We can get going after the meal."

Blake called his Spearow back.

Kendra and Blake soon made it to the entrance of Mt. Moon. The grassy areas had become sparser, giving way to lots of rock. Kendra made a face to herself. She wasn't keen on such ugly surroundings. Still, she could deal with it.

Standing outside the entrance to the mountain were two men in orange safety vests and hardhats. They asked to see Kendra and Blake's trainer licenses, and when they'd seen the licenses, the two men waved Kendra and Blake on into the tunnel.

The inside of Mt. Moon was dark, lit only by orange lights rigged up on stands. The lamps illuminated a path that was lined with ropes. Outside the ropes, members of the construction crew stood around next to digging machines, talking.

"Hey, you two!" One of the construction crew, possibly the foreman, came over to Kendra and Blake. "I don't know if they told you this outside, but make sure you stick to the path, even if you see Pokemon out there in the rest of the mountain. We've had five trainers get lost this month because they couldn't follow instructions, and we're behind on our work because of it. This mountain can be a dangerous place, especially if you're new trainers. So stick to the path. It's well-lit, and we make sure it's kept clear. You shouldn't have any problems. Got it?" Kendra and Blake nodded. "Good." The foreman went back over to his crew.

From: [identity profile] kyuze.livejournal.com
"Sticking to the path doesn't seem too terribly difficult," Blake muttered. Dark tunnels were not exactly his idea of a good place to be, particularly when the cave's maintenance crew gives a stern warning.

"At least we're not fumbling around in the dark, right? And the wild ones around here, they should be fairly easy to deal with, with our typings. There's no need to worry at all, Kendra."

"I'm... Um, I'm- my leg. I'm caught on something on my leg." He did need to chill, he decided. It was something just grabbing on his leg, he could do this. He mustered up some strength and tried to jerk his leg forward. The root did not give way, instead tightening against his leg and leaving his calf resting uncomfortably against his other leg.

Blake yelped, then collected himself, trying not to look too weak in front of Kendra.

"Um..." Kendra tried to think. She had no idea what Blake situation really was, but maybe she could still help him by tossing out ideas. "Um, maybe you could try backing up instead of moving forward, and then you'll become unstuck. You're the science dude, you just gotta experiment to see what works and what doesn't." She gave Blake a weak smile and tried not to think about how this delay was putting them farther and farther from Olive.

Blake nodded. He scooted backwards. After a couple of seconds, he moved his ankle around, trying to get out as calmly as he could without frantically and violently gyrating his leg. The gentle method seemed to work, and he pulled himself forward, getting out of the tiny crawlspace.

"Right, then," he said, brushing some loose dirt off of himself. "Olive." With that, he held up his Pokedex and started pointing around until he found the signal again. It was not as faint as before, but Olive wasn't exactly nearby.

"Let's go."

"Thank you, Officer Jenny, we'll keep that in mind," Kendra said in response to the sign, rolling her eyes. She dropped Blake's arm and grinned. "Man, I am so glad to be back on the path!" She patted the Pokeball at her waist. "And Olive's safe and sound, too. I guess all's well that ends well, right? Well, shall we go? Might as well get out before, like, we're chased by..." She thought for a moment, then snapped her fingers. "Zombie Clefairies!"

Zombies always disturbed Blake. He shuddered at the joke. "Right, then. Let's... Let's leave before that silly thing that would never ever happen... happens." He turned on the balls of his feet, taking a step on the right path, feeling very sure in his footing... Until his sure-footing failed him and he fell over something none to tall.

"Another stupid Geodude..." Blake said, picking himself up.

"-Fairy," came the singsong voice of an adorable, pink, cotton-candy-like Pokemon.

Blake gasped.

Really any food would do. If there was an artichoke heart store any closer than the noodle shop, he'd have opted for that.

"We're not... Seeing each other," Blake said, carefully selecting his words. "Kendra is helping me in the field with the research. The field research. As a friend. Because we're friends, doing field research with one another."

Sophie sensed that she had struck some sort of nerve or another and decided it might be best to switch topics. "What kind of things are you researching, if I may ask?"

"Pokemon calls. Translating so that we people can better understand them. Forging the Pokemon-Human gap, so to speak." Blake felt much more at ease explaining sciency things than his relationship with Kendra.

Sophie listened to Blake's explanation with interest. "What a fun thing to research. I've always wished that I could understand what Vivi was saying to me. There's so much we could learn from Pokemon if we could talk to them as equals." She paused. "I remember some readings from my Psychology of Pokemon class last semester. Have you read any Kowalski? We covered his theories of Pokemon societies and how they were affected by contact with humans."

Kendra had, in the mean time, paid for and begun to devour her noodles, slurping them down at light speed and with an intensity on her task usually reserved for working with nuclear materials. She kept an ear on the conversation, but it sounded like geek speak and pretty far out of her league. Kendra had never been the best student, mainly due to lack of interest, and while she did like to read in her spare time, she certainly didn't choose educational stuff. Well, whatever. As long as Blake was interested too, no sense in derailing the conversation that Sophie wanted to have. Besides, there were noodles to eat.

At a much calmer pace, though certainly far from slow, Blake started into his food. "That sounds good to me, Kendra. I'm eager to see what all we can do in this town. We've got the upper hand, after all."

"Oh, really?" Sophie asked. "You're that confident?"

"Of course. We're somewhat seasoned trainers with a good grasp on theory, and we've got type advantage. It'll be a piece of cake."

Sophie smiled, politely taking a napkin and methodically cutting into her food with a fork and knife.

Breakfast went by quickly, with idle Pokemon-related chatter making up the conversation. After about a half an hour, the three young people left the cafe.

"Hm..." Kendra looked around. "Say, I bet that building's the gym, going by how huge it is. And there's a bunch of benches outside it. Wanna go over there? I'll bring out Cheri and you can see her, Sophie."

"That sounds fine," Sophie said with a smile.

The building was indeed the gym. It was a fairly busy part of town, with people going to and fro, but there were a couple of unoccupied benches in front of the gym, so Kendra sat down and released her Pokemon. "Meet Olive and Cheri!"

Kendra caught Misty's icy look and held it, smirking back. "Two of your Pokemon against one of mind? Well, I suppose it would even the odds for you a bit."

"No, no, I meant you and your friend fighting one of my Pokemon." Misty gave Kendra a tight-lipped smile. "As a gym leader, I have to make my challenges fair. I'll defeat you easily enough with just one Pokemon; I can't make it a slaughter and use two."

Kendra broke the eye contact with a haughty toss of her head. "If you insist. I won't say no to an easy win." She crouched down next to Olive and fetched a Potion from her pack. "Let's get you healed up, Olive. We've got another battle coming up!"

"Come on out, Seel! We've got challengers!" Misty tossed a Pokeball, and a Seel emerged, barking enthusiastically. To Blake and Kendra, Misty said, "Choose your Pokemon. We'll begin whenever you're ready."

Blake straightened his collar. So much as he disliked being taken lightly, he enjoyed an easy win. "C'mon out, Sai."

His Psyduck seemed rather excited about a battle with fellow water-type Pokemon. It splashed about playfully in the water before giving the Seel a goofy yet dignified look.

"I'd say I was offended by this whole two-on-one ordeal, except that it'll be a nice opportunity to show off a little teamwork." He shrugged.

"Dinner at the burger stand, all right?" Blake called after her, much cheerier than before.

As Kendra faded out of view, Blake's morale sunk. He'd never really trained to train before. He was never really the type to grind until he got better. He was going to ask Kendra to spar with him, but realized that she probably had her own plans and ideas to work with. Just when he was starting to slip back into the doom and gloom of not being able to do anything...

"Hey, I've got an idea." Sophie spoke up. Blake had all but forgotten about her. "While she's off training, we could, if you like, make a visit that I think would benefit you greatly. That is, if you don't already have something in mind."

Blake smiled. Anything she had was better than nothing. "Lead the way."

And lead, she did. Blake followed her for a few blocks until she stopped in front of a large building. "Cerulean City Library. Misty said you needed to book up, so let's go get some books."

They went into the library and Sophie took off down the aisles of books, looking for some specific ones. Blake made his way to the computer index, trying to find some books on Pokemon battle theory. In a matter of about half an hour, between Blake and Sophie there were a good ten books to sift through.

"Do you really think this many books is a good idea? I don't think I could get through all of these without burning out."

Sophie seemed to be thinking about something. As oblivious as Blake was, he didn't notice that she seemed to be plotting something. "Well," she started, trying to gain her nerve. "If you'd like, I could help you go through all of the material, and I could help to quiz you."

"That sounds great! Thanks a lot!"

"But. I have a condition. I want you to let me borrow Sai while I'm helping you study."

Blake was hesitant to let his Pokemon go with her for a brief second. He decided that, not only did he definitely trust her, he was going to be with her while they studied, so there was no risk at all. "Sure."

And with that, they went to check out the books. Blake used his researcher's card to borrow the material, and they went to the center. True to his word, he gave Sophie Sai's Pokeball.

She let out the Psyduck and her own Vulpix. "Vivi? Take Sai around the back of the center and play some tag. Wind down and relax. Come on inside center before the sun sets, okay?"

The Vulpix, nuzzling its owner's leg, nodded, then turned around quickly to face Sai. It motioned its head towards the way to the back of the center and bounded off. Sai was It, Vulpix seemed to say. Sai chased after Vivi, and the two were soon out of sight, playing safely.

Blake and Sophie, on the other hand, took seats in the center and started sifting. They would take notes and compare notes on anything from move descriptions to power statistics.

The session seemed rather short, though it ran for quite a while. They had made some progress by the time Vivi and Sai returned. A couple of the books were laying in a separate pile, likely never to be opened again. Blake and Sophie each had more than a few pages of notes.

"I guess we should go meet up with Kendra, then?" Blake asked.

"Sure, let's just drop this stuff off in your room first."

After a quick run to Blake's room, the trainers and their Pokemon made for the burger shop.

Misty had made far too many good points for Blake to ignore. He needed to do more than just book up. He needed to practice training with his Pokemon. Kendra wasn't exactly like he was. She was in it for the battles, and he was more there for studies. But if she was going to help him with his research, then he was going to help her with her battles. He was sure that the next time they went up against Misty, he'd be a more suitable partner.

Most of his night, he spent going over notes and petting his Psyduck. The rest, he spent in an awkward zone between sleep and deep thought. Things were going to change. They were going to be different: better.

Kendra rose with the sun the next morning. Then she checked the time, swore, and went back to sleep. A couple hours later, Kendra woke up and began getting dressed and ready for the day. After the full night of sleep and all the new information she'd learned the night before, Kendra was feeling much more cheery about life in general. She hummed to herself as she went to pick up her Pokemon from the front desk. Attaching the Pokeballs to her belt, Kendra looked around. "Wonder if Blake is up..." she mumbled to herself. Kendra reached for her phone and punched in Blake's number. If he was awake and already at breakfast, he could tell her where to go. If he was still asleep, the phone call would serve as a wake-up call. There was no call for Blake to sleep the whole day through.

"I imagine that the pancakes probably aren't faded like they are in the menu. Better not to judge a book by it's cover, right? I mean, if the people here come back so often, it must be because the food is good, right?"

Pancakes didn't sound that bad, actually. That was the plan, then. Several delicious, sweet, tiny pancakes and hopefully a small tub of maple syrup.

"What food are you feeling?"

"Olive, change things up! Use Stun Spore!" Olive had only learned that move the day before during the mega practice session, but Kendra felt that she could pull it off. It would be really useful in slowing down the robbers and their Pokemon. "Oh! And try not to hit anyone who's on our side!" That would be, well, not so useful.

The spores were in the air, and already an enemy Machoke was moving sluggishly, allowing a Raticate that one of the by-standers was commanding to use its Hyperfang attack. A Tangela and a Goldeen were double-teaming a robber whose Koffing had been taken down by a combination of Olive's Acid and a Horn Attack. Even better, the sound of police sirens was drawing closer. Kendra shot Blake a grin, but her happiness was cut short when a distressed "Piiiii!" cut the air. Cheri had been cornered by a Machoke and a Charmeleon.

"Oh no you don't," Kendra growled. Jeez, stupid of her to let poor Cheri out to fight unsupervised when she was still so new to the team. And a Machoke too! Type weakness, duh! Full of righteous anger, Kendra stormed over to the one-sided battle that was in progress.

"Turn left! No, not you Sai, Lance! Now dive! Dive!" Managing both Pokemon at once was coming a little slowly to Blake. He wondered idly how he managed to get so far out of the laboratory that he needed to battle for the forces of good, or whatever this would be called.

Not in his introspection for long, Blake saw out of the corner of his eye a cornered Clefairy. While that, on its own right, was a sour sight, it was Kendra marching towards Pokemon about her size that scared him. He expected things might very well turn ugly, or uglier than they already were.

"Lance, swoop down at that Machoke! Sai, get into a position to blast that Charmeleon!"

Lance proved much faster on the draw than Sai. There was little air traffic, and he was harassing the Machoke in an instant. Sai, on the other hand, waddled through Pokemon after warring Pokemon to find his mark. Blake hoped he'd make it in time before Kendra did something Blake would regret.
